2019 Exam Paper Practice
1 (a) (i) 1: BBC1 number one's viewer count is substantially larger than BBC2's number one viewer count
2: BBC1 is all "World Cup" football whereas BBC2 has many different TV shows
(ii) 1: ITV1 viewer count is similar to ITV2 apart from the anomaly being ITV1 number one which is larger than ITV2 number one.
2: ITV1 has the "World Cup" and "Coronation Street". These two are football and a soap opera whereas ITV2 is all "Love Island" which is a reality show.
(b) 1: BBC1 is all World Cup, this could be because of the fact that football is extremely popular, especially in Britain. Therefore, it will bring more viewers even if they are football fans or not.
2: Love Island is popular with a younger audience which makes them almost relate to the people on Love Island as they're not much older.
3: ITV1 and 2 viewer count is quite similar because they are not as popular as the BBC plus the shows are not as popular as the ones shown on BBC1 and 2.
2 (a) 1: One reason is that the Metro has always been free in most major train stations meaning that people will pick it up regardless of any opinions they have about the newspaper.
2: Another reason is that The Sun and the Daily Mail have had a huge change compared to the Metro; this is because The Sun and the Daily Mail have a big online presence and when it's online it is free whereas you have to pay for the physical paper. The Metro doesn't have an online presence nearly as big as the other two, explaining why it doesn't have as much change.
(b) One reason is that The Sun is cheaper than the Daily Mail, which attracts a bigger audience, making the total circulation much larger than the Daily Mail and the change is less than it. The political views are also not as strong as the Daily Mail which attracts a larger audience to The Sun as it is less biased.
(c) 1: The Daily Mail could increase its circulation by making the papers cheaper so more consumers would buy the paper, therefore increasing its readership.
2: Both The Sun and the Daily Mail could increase their readership by slowly decreasing their online presence and making consumers rely on physical papers to read about the news in their newspapers.
3 1: A benefit of synergy is that a company like Disney by owning every stage of the production process, adopt vertical integration so they do not have to pay other people to help them with parts of the production process. This means they make more profit.
2: Another benefit would be the use of horizontal integration
4 (a) 1: A disadvantage could be that there is a potential for financial risk
2: There is a lot of stress when working in an independent digital media company
(b): To overcome the potential for financial risk, an independent could become a part of a joint venture. This is where two independent companies combine the strength of their marketing efforts to build sales revenue.
5 1: They can collect data through social media engagement in posts. Seeing how many clicks, comments and shares users get; they would do this to see who to recommend the posts to.
2: Another way is to run questionnaires and surveys. This way they can collect qualitative and quantitative data. They would do this by making questions that can be answered with tick boxes or one-word answers, they would also make questions that make the user whose doing the survey write detailed answers.
6 1: One way is the use of streaming services. They have had a great impact on the distribution of media products as with a streaming service. An advantage of using streaming services as a form of technological convergence is that anything can be watched on different devices, for example watching Netflix on your phone and then moving to a TV whilst watching the same piece of media.
2: Another way that technological convergence has had an impact on the distribution of media products is the internet. An advantage of the internet is that the development of online platforms has greatly increased the distribution locations to a global scale, this means that distributors can gain more revenue and a larger audience.
7: The Netflix show called 'GLOW' uses editing techniques to contribute to creating a narrative in the episode named 'Freaky Tuesdays'. During this episode, we are introduced to the main character (Tamme) via a pan-down to close-up which focuses on her face. This would be stated as a state of equilibrium from Todorov's Narrative Theory. After this, non-diegetic music introduces the whole scene; it's full of repetitive musical phrases which mirrors the nature of Tamme's repetitive work. This is Tamme doing the same wrestling show over and over. This links to Strauss' binary opposition.
We see that Tamme takes tablets and drinks wine before and after her performances as shown with a static close-up; this establishes that she is in pain, using wine and tablets to numb it. Not much longer we see that she has back pain. The back pain could be seen as a villain from Propp's character types.
In another scene, we are shown, mise-en-scene, her trying to numb her pain with a shower handle; using the heat as a numbing agent for her back pain. It is symbolic of pain management as Barthes's narrative codes.
8 1: One reason could be entertainment as a consumer may watch a TV show, like Wednesday, to escape from their home and school life.
2:
3:
9 1: One way is that a radio station may use social media to interact with listeners to gain more feedback on their radio channel and keep their listeners.
2: A newspaper will use social media for advertising new releases so consumers will buy them; they will also post small snippets of the content that is mentioned in the newspaper to attract a larger audience and make consumers want to read it.
10: A controversial example of a media product is 'The Dark Knight', created in 2008 and was rated a 12A by the BBFC. The film was blunt and graphic in nature which caused concern for parents as the rating was low meaning anyone 12 or under with a parent can see the film. The BBFC's comeback to this concern was that the violence didn't dwell on detail.
