Barthes in Tarantino Films
A code is an aspect of a text from which the audience can derive meaning. We can
do this through decoding or deconstructing the text; literally breaking it to pieces.
• Hermeneutic/enigma code - An enigma code is a mystery within a text that is not
immediately answered.
• Proairetic/action code - Parts of a narrative which are related to things
happening. This code, along with enigma codes can create considerable
suspense.
• Semantic code - Something within a text that means something, often multiple
meanings. There can be many meanings within a single text.
• Symbolic code - A part of a text that 'stands in' for, or means something else.
• Referential code - Where a part of a text refers to something outside of the text. This assumes the audience has knowledge of whatever it is that the text is referring to.
https://youtu.be/x2WK_eWihdU?t=57 - Referential Code because Samuel L. Jackson recites a bible passage that references the bible outside of the text
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86Ckh80mLlQ - Semantic code and Symbolic code because the fake Nazi signalled '3' differently to Germans' giving himself away. Semantic because he uses a sign to mean something
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jomr9SAjcyw - Enigma code because the audience don't know what is actually going on at first, creating mystery
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xerx80SWgkA - Action code because action being used to further the plot and develop the character
